Get Some! The Best Video Games to Give a Gamer

Need a video game gift guide? That’s understandable. Gamers can be one of the easiest or one of the most difficult types of people to buy gifts for. Some gamers have played only one game for the last 10 years and have optimized everything they own around that game already, while others buy everything they can get their hands on, just to have it. To buy a truly meaningful gift for a gamer, it’s important to at least have an idea of what games they play, what consoles they own, and what type of gamer they are.

In the following video game gift guide, I have gone through a few of the top games and accessories for all the major consoles as well as for mobile and PC gamers.

The Nintendo Switch is probably going to be one of the hottest items this holiday season with the recent release of the Switch Lite. For only $199, anyone can now get into the fastest-selling gaming console in US history.

That being said, there is a good chance the gamer you’re buying for may already have a Switch. If that’s the case, there are plenty of awesome games and accessories coming out to help them have even more fun.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate also just broke a record as the best-selling fighting game of all time. With the most stages, characters, and upcoming DLC [downloadable content] of any Super Smash Bros game, this is sure to please any gamer. With the release of the brand new Pokemon Sword and Shield on November 15th, almost all of Nintendo’s highly anticipated and announced games will be released. Other great choices this holiday season:

  • Luigi’s Mansion 3
  • Super Mario Maker 2
  • Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

If your gamer already has all the games they might want, there are always the awesome accessories to go with the console. A Switch Pro Controller, a large (256GB or bigger) micro SD card, or an extra set of Joycons would always be welcomed by a Switch gamer.

The PS4 has always been a prized possession of gamers and the games for Sony’s console in this video game gift guide definitely don’t disappoint. PSVR, Sony’s virtual reality system, attaches to a PS4 and is one of the most popular setups in the industry right now. Virtual reality is one of those new technologies that can amaze and entertain anyone.

If your gamer already has a VR setup or might not be into that type of thing, Sony has an enormous list of exclusives and very popular games out right now as well.

  • Gran Turismo for the racing fans
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man for the super hero enthusiasts
  • God of War, Bloodborne, and The Last Of Us if you’re looking for some amazing stories and themes better suited for older gamers.

Each console has some great exclusive games, and the Xbox One is no exception. Gears of War 5 was released in September of this year and is an enthralling game to be played by yourself or cooperatively through the whole campaign. And you can’t mention Xbox exclusives without mentioning Halo 5: Guardians. While that is a little bit of an older game, it will never disappoint.

If you’re looking for something suited for a younger audience, Forza Horizon 4 is one of the best racing games ever released and Sea Of Thieves is a choose your own adventure style pirate and sailing game. Whether your gamer wants to fight intergalactic monsters or sail the high seas, there is definitely a great game available for them.

New consoles coming soon

If the gamer in your life doesn’t have a console and you’re contemplating getting them one, be aware that both Sony and Microsoft have announced new consoles that are expected to launch around the holidays of 2020. This can be both good and bad.

On the good side, the current consoles are probably going to be discounted this year like we haven’t seen before and they have massive game libraries that will never get old. On the bad side, probably less than a year away, there will be newer, more powerful hardware that is going to be at the top of every gamer’s list to have. If your gamer has to have the latest and greatest, it may just be worth it to wait until next year to invest in the new hardware.

PC gaming

PC gamers might be some of the most difficult gamers to buy gifts for. If you know what game they play, titles such as Fortnite, League of Legends, or World of Warcraft, it might just be best to purchase them some in-game currency cards. These can be found at most stores like Walmart or Best Buy and definitely on Amazon.

If they are in need of any new equipment, the HyperX Cloud Revolver S as well as the SteelSeries Artcis Pro headsets are considered some of the best. Corsair and Razer are highly rated in the mouse and keyboard category and are the absolute most important peripherals when it comes to gaming on a PC.

Mobile gaming

Most studies find that over 70% of mobile phone owners play games on those phones. Most of these people probably don’t need much more to enjoy their games but would love a gift card to the Apple or Google Play store so they can get more of those games or pay for some of the in-game currency they use.

For someone that is much more into gaming on their phone, it’s hard to beat the Razer Phone 2 with their newly released Junglecat bluetooth controllers. With these low-latency, Switch like add-ons for your Android phone, this is going to take mobile gaming to a new level.

Gamers just want to have fun

At their core, gamers just want to have fun, that’s why they play video games. Everyone can be a gamer as well, there are so many categories, genres, and price points for games. If none of these suggestions seem right for the gamer in your life, make sure the gift you get them will help them to have fun. Maybe it could even help you have fun with them.
