Not feeling the love this February? Some of you may be dreading Valentine’s Day, whether you’re single, recently broken up, or just despise “Hallmark holidays.” Hey, we’ve all been there, and it can be a bummer.
But if you think about it, being a geek means you always have love in your life – that all-consuming love for whatever you geek out about. You can redeem the day with these five (+) ways for single geeks to survive and thrive Valentine’s Day (aka Single Awareness Day) in Kansas City.
Host your own damn party
Don’t wait for someone to invite you out – host your own gathering of nerds, fanboys, and fangirls. You can find endless inspiration for any kind of party you like, and it doesn’t even have to reference love or naked flying babies or hearts. Unless it’s a Doctor Who party, then it should reference two hearts (plus, what’s more heartbreaking than, “Rose Tyler, I…”??). Some ideas to get you started:
- Hobbit party
- Star Wars party
- Star Trek party (don’t forget the Vulcan soup!)
- Harry Potter party
- Anti-Valentine’s Day party (not geeky, but potentially cathartic)
- Galentine’s Day
Frag all the things
On a day like Valentine’s Day, it might be best to point all the rage and resentment towards non-player characters. Gather your gaming buddies and host a LAN party, or meet up at any one of the Kansas City gaming centers and tabletop stores – see a list with links on the Kansas City Geek Stores page.
Also Groupon is offering a number of sweet gaming deals – where it’s considered acceptable to shoot people, even your friends!
- Jaegerz laser tag deal [expired]
- Jaegers paintball deal [expired]
- SoPro Gaming deal [expired]
- VR gaming at NovaStar Gaming center deal [expired]
Movie marathon/Streaming binge
Put on your Ninja Turtle fleece pants or Batgirl onesie (like mine!), and settle in for an night of your favorite flicks or series. Some obvious choices, with a few ideas sprinkled in from my TBW (to-be-watched) list suggested by fellow nerds:
- Lord of the Rings trilogy
- Star Wars in Machete order (Episodes IV, V, II, III, VI – full explanation here)
- Star Trek II: Wrath of Kahn/Star Trek: Out of Darkness
- any Studio Ghibli of your choice
- Stranger Things
- Dark Matter
- Daredevil/Jessica Jones/Luke Cage
- The OA
- Amazon Prime
- Orphan Black
- Mr. Robot
- Doctor Who
- HBO Go/HBO Now
- Game of Thrones
Kansas City comic book store hop
Load up the car with your boards, bags, and boxes, hit up several amazing Kansas City comic book stores, and fill in some of the blank spots in your collection. Who knows – you may meet the person of your dreams in front of your favorite comic!
Learn something new
Con season is right around the corner (Planet Comicon is in just over two months!) – is your cosplay ready? Set aside the evening to work on your Overwatch Tracer chronal accelerator chestpiece, your Princess Leia cinnamon-bun headband, or Daryl Dixon’s angel wing vest. More tutorials:
Later in the month, local Kansas City makerspace Hammerspace is putting on some cosplay workshops hosted by Planet Comicon, so be on the lookout for those, too!
